ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

 

Entry requirements

 

 

Full credit value can be considered in case of the following programmes: In the field of social sciences: sociology, political science, and international studies; in the field of economics: applied economics, business administration, and management.

 

Bachelor or master programmes in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, agriculture, computer science and information technology, as well as in the fields of economics and social sciences, may also be considered. In addition, those undergraduate and master's degree programs are also considerable, which are accepted by the credit transfer committee of the university based on the comparison of the taken courses with the above-mentioned programmes.

 

In all these latter cases (where full credit value cannot be considered), the minimum number of credits required for admission to the master's program by field of study is as follows:

 

at least 40 credits in the following areas of knowledge:

 

  • Social history and social sciences: at least 20 credits
  • Research methodology, quantitative analysis methods: at least 15 credits
  • Mathematics, statistics: at least 5 credits

 

If the student does not have at least 40 credits, they may still be admitted if they have a total of at least 20 credits in the listed areas of knowledge. However, the missing credits must be obtained in parallel with the master's degree program, within two semesters of admission, in accordance with the study and examination regulations of the higher education institution

Required language competencies

 

 

English

 

Minimum level of language proficiency (both written and oral): B2

 

IELTS Score: 5.5

TOEFL IBT Band: 46-59 

Cambridge English Scale Score: 162

 

If the applicant does not have any of the above certifications, their English proficiency will be assessed during the admission interview. Any letter of acceptance issued by the Faculty of Social Sciences is based on the verified fact that the applicant’s command of English has been assessed; therefore, they are considered eligible to pursue their studies at the institution.


If the applicant can prove that they completed their former education entirely in English by submitting a notarized attestation and a detailed academic transcript, no proof of language knowledge will be required throughout the admission process.

You are required to pay 100/150/200 EUR application fee (non-refundable) depending on the application period, at the following link:  ELTE Online Fizetési Rendszer

 

Please follow the instructions below carefully: 

  1. In the Faculty dropdown menu select the Faculty of Social Sciences
  2. In the payment title; please selct the application fee option
  3. In the Subtitle field, select the programme level you are applying for(BA,BSc/MA,MSc/PhD)
  4. In the Discount Code field, enter the code based on your application period: 
     
    Early Bird application period: enter this specific code: EARLY TÁTK2 
    Regular period: enter this specific code: EARLY TÁTK 3 

 

The discount codes work without accents, but they are sensitive to spaces. To avoid any issues, the best option is to copy and paste the code directly as shown above. 

 

Please note that during the last call  period, there is no need to use a discount code.

Please note that if you are a citizen of a non-EU/non-EEA country, you may have to transfer the first semester's tuition fee before your visa appointment takes place.

 

The tuition fee is to be paid through our online study system called Neptun. Admitted students will find the exact payment details in the letter of acceptance.

Application / examination procedure

 

 

First the applicant should fill the online application form and submit the following documents through our online application surface:

 

  • Application form (apply.elte.hu)
  • Bachelor-level degree

  • Copy of application fee transfer

  • Language certificate (if the applicant has one

 

Application procedure

 

The application starts on the online application system. Students need to register in the system, fill in the online application form, upload the required documents and follow the instructions during the application process.

 

Students who (also) hold Hungarian citizenship must apply through felvi.huPlease note that if an application is not submitted through the aforementioned platform, it will be rejected.  

 

Procedure of the entrance examination

 

The application deadline refers to the final submission of the complete application package through the online system.

 

For the September intake, there are three application periods:

 

  1. Early Bird Period: November 20, 2025, to January 15, 2026, 23:59 (CET)
  2. Regular Period:  January 20, 2026, to April 30, 2026, 23:59 (CET)
  3. Last Call Period: May 5, 2026, to May 31, 2026, 23:59 (CET)

 

These distinct periods allow applicants the flexibility to submit their applications at their convenience. All applicants within each period have an equal chance of gaining admission to the programme.

 

After each application deadline, the Admission Board reviews the applications. After the admission interview, applicants are informed of the selection outcome through the online application system within approximately one month.  If the offer is accepted, admission letters are sent out through the online application system as soon as possible, as specified in the offer decision.

 

Applicants with a full application package will be notified after the application deadline about the exact time and date of application interviews conducted via Ms Teams. Applicants are responsible for having technically suitable conditions for the interview from their side.

 

Based on the results, certain students may be placed on a waiting list. Final results are expected by the first half of August.

Further details of selection and evaluation

 

Applicants with a full application package will be asked to participate in an oral entrance exam. The institutional admission scores are based on a total evaluation of academic excellence (based on the submitted documents) and the results of the entrance exam. The entrance exam seeks to assess the general and professional knowledge and interest of the applicant.  

 

A successful oral entrance exam is the prerequisite of getting admitted. If the applicant fails the oral entrance exam, the application will be rejected.

After a short introduction and questions about the motivation of the candidates, the candidates will be asked about the interpretation and understanding of a digital social behavioral problem, which will be introduced by the entrance examination committee.

Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship programme

The Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship was established by the Hungarian Government for those who live in a Hungarian diaspora outside of Europe and wish to study at a Hungarian higher education institution to develop their personal, professional and cultural relations to Hungary.

The programme aims to support the professional advancement of the scholarship holders with high-quality Hungarian higher education while improving their Hungarian language skills and strengthening their Hungarian identity. After graduation, scholarship holders return to their home country with competitive skills and knowledge that enables them to support their community, preserve Hungarian values and reinforce the relations between the diaspora and Hungary.
