Main research areas
In the 2000s and 2010s, I carried out intensive fieldwork in Hungarian correctional institutions among male and female inmates. The focus of my interest was the social relations of prisoners, the issue of ethnicity and gender roles, the symbols that can be observed in the penitentiary, and the functioning of therapeutic communities (of substance abusers and sex offenders). Since 2023, I conduct research with László Huszár with the aim of mapping the mental representations of inmates on criminal types and the transformation of these prototypes from the 90s to the present day.
I conducted participant observation in American prison communities and in a Colombian Alcoholics Anonymous group in connection with the functioning of self-help communities and the development of social relationships and life history narratives.
Since 2022, I have been regularly doing field work in palliative departments of Hungarian public hospitals. The focus of my interest is the cultural models of death and dying, the subjective experience of serious illness and suffering, and the examination of hospice departments from a cultural anthropological viewpoint.
