Main research areas
Theories of international relations aim to explain, understand, and theorize the changes and continuities of international politics. My research is focued on applying these theories to events and phenomena of historical and contemporary interest, particularly those that I discuss during my teaching activities with students. One such event is the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has spurred much debate within the scientific community as to what exactly explains the outbreak of hostilities in February 2022. Furthermore, I am interested in theories of diplomacy, particularly the question of diplomatic normalization, which is an underresearched area of inquiry in the discipline. Of interest to me is how and why states stuck in enmity find their way back to diplomacy and begin to normalize their relations.
My research is focused on China's foreign policy, international relations and global diplomatic activity. China is one of the most important and influential developing country in the world, which means understanding its goals and interests is of significance not just for the scientific community but for decision-makers, too. One of my focal points is the China policy of countres in the Eastern European region, including Hungary. This region is of growing interest for China not just because of political relations, which are often better than those with Western Europe, but because of economic ties, too. Eastern Europe is significant in China's Belt and Road Initiative. My research aims to understand how the changing configuration of factors (political, diplomatic etc.) shapes the region's approach to China, and what aspects and interests explain China's foreign policy in the region.
